With the imminent easing of international travel bans, expats who had shelved plans to relocate abroad are now looking to reboot their futures; according to a recent survey by Aetna International.

Expats in Germany, UAE, Singapore and Mexico were asked a series of questions in order to determine whether the global pandemic had lead them to rethink their futures or even abandon their dreams. With so much uncertainty during the last few months it would not have been a surprise if their answers demonstrated a reluctance to pursue the expat experience. However, the results of the survey showed the opposite, with 75% of those interviewed declaring confidence in their chosen path.

The most positive responses came from expats who had moved to (or were looking to move to) countries that had best handled the COVID 19 response. Singapore, with an 88% positive response, and the UAE, with an 87% positive response, came out on top. Nevertheless, two thirds of expats connected to countries that had been hardest hit by the pandemic were still positive about their plans.

Even though the plans and aspirations of expats have remained surprisingly constant, the pandemic has certainly focused minds on the issue of health, with 70% of the expats surveyed saying that access to quality health care was a prime concern during lockdown.
